The primary focus of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is to provide emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. The EMT acts within the provisions of Code of Colorado Regulations Emergency Medical Services 6 CCR 1015-3 and functions as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. He or she perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. The EMT is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.

Regulatory Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current Emergency Medical Technician Certification, within state of Colorado.
    • Advanced:  Current Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Certification, within state of Colorado.
    • Intermediate:  Current Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate Certification, within state of Colorado.
    • Paramedic:  Current Paramedic Certification, within state of Colorado.
  • Must obtain IV certification within 3 months of hire.
  • Current BLS certification.
    • Intermediate and Paramedic:  Current ACLS and PALS certifications.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Must obtain certifications in IS-100.b or IS-100.HCb (Introduction to the Incident Command System), IS-200.b or IS-200.HCa (Applying Incident Command System (ICS) to Healthcare Organizations), IS-700.a (National Incident Management System), IS-800.b (National Response Framework, an Introduction), , EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operators Course) within six months of employment.
  • PHTLS (Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support) and EPC (Emergency Pediatric Care) certification within one year of employment.
    • Intermediate and Paramedic:  PHTLS (Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support), AMLS (Advanced Medical Life Support) certification within one year of employment.
  • Haz-Mat Awareness is preferred but not required.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license, with continued clear driving record required.

These requirements represent EMT (Basic).  Levels above EMT (Basic) require additional certifications.

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.
  • Self motivated and a strong emphasis on communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Skills:

  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Strong communication skills.

Critical Physical Demand Summary:

  • Lifting Low Lift: Exert 60 to 100 lbs occasionally.
  • Lifting Combo Lift: Exert 2 to 30 lbs occasionally.
  • Carrying Preferred: Exert 20 to 30 lbs occasionally.
  • Push/Pull Both push and pull: Exert 30 to 30 lbs occasionally.
  • Push/Pull Preferred method: Exert 90 to 90 lbs occasionally.
  • Push/Pull Push: Exert 110 to 110 lbs rarely.
  • Grip Preferred: Exert 5 to 40 lbs continuously.
  • Pinch Preferred: Exert 10 to 10 lbs occasionally.
